Your thoughts impact your whole life!
As you may or may not know, I am a member of Village Toastmasters, my local chapter of Toastmasters International. Toastmasters is a public speaking and leadership club, dedicated to helping people overcome their fears of public speaking, perfect their speaking skills, and learn how to be an effective leader. It’s a great club, and guests are always welcome. If you are at all interested, check out our site for more info.
Now, I didn’t just bring this up for shameless promotion, I do also have a point to make. Last week I had signed up for Toastmaster, pretty much the person who controls the whole meeting, and then realized I had forgotten to prepare earlier and had an incredibly busy day ahead of me.
“Oh, CRAP!” I thought.
Then it came to me, “CRAP!”
The “CRAP” you put upon yourself can be deconstructed and understood. Only then can you stop it from happening again. Don’t let “CRAP” stop you! But first, what is it “CRAP?”
Complacence: Being so comfortable with your state that you do nothing. Often when you are complacent it is not because nothing is wrong, you feel comfortable because you are ignoring what is wrong. Don’t ignore things that need improvement.
Reluctance: Now that we’re paying attention to the problem, we must take action. Don’t hold back, taking risks is important to the learning process.
Afraid: Stepping up to the plate can be intimidating. But most of your fears are imagined anyways. What’s really the worst thing that could happen? And is it really that bad?
Procrastination: “Well, I know what needs work, I am going to take action, and I’m not afraid, but I just can’t do it right now because….” Sound like you? Well I sound like that too sometimes. Postponing will never make it easier, like me with my Toastmasters role, I had to prepare quickly and I didn’t do my best because of it.
Possible symptoms of “CRAP”:
And most of all,
Most likely, it’s because of “CRAP”.
“CRAP” shows up far too often in our lives, but when you realize “CRAP” is happening, you have the power to stop it.
Don’t let “CRAP” get in your way.
